Materials and Methods: This test evaluated the effectiveness of insecticides for control of late season tarnished plant bug in cotton. Sampling consisted of examining visually the number of plant bug adults and nymphs in 25 terminals and squares. Plots within each replicate were sprayed sequentially to maintain true replicate integrity, however two replicates were sprayed one day following the first replicates because of equipment malfunction.

Discussion: Bidrin 8E (0.4 lb [ai]), Fury 1.5EC (0.037 lb [ai]), Karate 1E (0.028 lb [ai]), and Orthene 90S (0.5 lb [ai]) treatments resulted in fewer tarnished plant bugs than the water treated check. The Methyl Parathion treatment was ineffective, resulting in significantly higher numbers of bugs than the Bidrin 8E (0.4 lb [ai]), Fury 1.5EC (0.037 lb [ai]), Karate 1E (0.028 lb [ai]), and Orthene 90S (0.5 lb [ai]), and Dimethoate 4E (0.25 lb [ai]) treatments. These results obtained at the end of the growing season indicate resistance to methyl parathion and poor control from most of the compounds tested. The plant bug population was composed mostly of adults which would be more difficult to control than younger insects. Also, some insecticides in the trial appear to be more efficacious with 2 applications, and such efficacy would not be evident in this trial.
