TITLE: EVALUATION OF LARVACIDES AND LARVACIDE COMBINATIONS TO CONTROL FALL ARMY WORMS IN COTTON

LOCATION: Joe Morgan Farm, Petal, MS

REPORT:

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Cotton Variety: Planting date:
Plot Width: 4 rows
Plot length: 50 feet
Row spacing: 38 inches
Buffer rows between plots: 4
Buffer at end of plots: 10 feet

Experimental Design: Randomized complete block, with 4 replications.

Application dateWindspeedTemperature (°F) Humidity (%)
7/29/97510267

Application method:
Nozzle configuration:
19 inches
Application parameters: 4 mph; 10 gallons per acre; 39 PSI.

Insects present during trial:
Fall Armyworm: Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith)
Corn Earworm: Helicoverpa Zea (Bodie)
Tobacco Budworm: Heliothis Virescens(F.)
Yellow striped armyworm: Spodoptera ornithogalli (Guenee)

Materials and Methods: The number of Fall armyworms, heliothine larvae, and yellow striped armyworms in bolls was recorded three days after treatment. Singnificant rainfall occurred within one hour after application, no doubt reducing the efficacy of insecticides.

Discussion: This test was applied just prior to rain and should probably be considered only as an evaluation of rainfastness. There were no significant differences in the number of Fall armyworms, heilothines, or yellow striped armyworms.
